No fire reported at El Cerrito’s, smoke gets into restaurant due to malfunctioning HVAC unit

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A fire call late Wednesday morning in downtown Coldwater looked a lot worse than it really was.

Coldwater firefighters were called to the El Cerrito’s Restaurant at 74 West Chicago at 11:20 a.m. after a malfunctioning HVAC unit on the roof sent smoke into the restaurant.

Coldwater Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said there was no fire.

After checking to make sure there was no fire extension, crews left just before 12:00 noon and the restaurant re-opened.

Quincy firefighters were called in on automatic mutual aid.
