COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater girls softball team collected money for the fight against cancer and scored a doubleheader sweep of the Hastings Saxons on Friday as they won by scores of 12-2 and 17-2. Coldwater collected 33 hits in the twinbill. McDonald’s Player of the Game Stacy Guzy had three hits and two RBI’s in the first game as did Jamie Wellet. Winning pitcher Darlene Horn also had three hits. Guzy was the winning pitcher in the nightcap that only went three innings. Horn was the McDonald’s Player of the Game in the second contest as she, Wellet and Kendall Galloway all had three hits. Galloway also drove in three runs. The Cardinals are now 11-1 overall.
Coldwater’s J.V. girls softball team also swept Hastings 17-0 and 17-2 as they improved to 12-1 overall. Tyler Scheid and Emma Stanley were the winning pitchers. Scheid collected six RBI’s in the twinbill.
—BASEBALL—
The Union City Chargers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh as they defeated Athens 13-12 in the completion of a game that was suspended on Tuesday. After Charger pitcher Seth Bruce set down the side in the top of the seventh, Tyler Mathiak reached on an infield single, moved up on a passed ball and Bruce doubled him in. Eli Way then laid down a bunt to move Bruce to third and on the throw to first, Bruce scored to make it 12-12. With Way stealing second, Colin Kreger ripped a walk off double off the fence that scored Way for the win. The Chargers are now 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big 8 Conference.
Bronson scored seven runs in the bottom of the second and went on to defeat Fremont 12-8. Noah Roberts pitched four innings to get the victory. Brenden Bell drove in five runs as he collected three hits which included two doubles. Tommy Littlefield drove in three runs for Bronson as the Vikings improved to 7-1.
—GIRLS SOCCER—
The Coldwater girls soccer team got back on the winning track Friday night, beating Pennfield 3-1 in Interstate 8 play. Madison Marsh had one goal and one assist, while Malorie Rzepka and Samantha Rodesiler also scored. Megan Hoath had an assist as Coldwater improves to 3-1-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Nadia Kiersey had 6 saves in goal as the Cardinals out shot Pennfield 16-13. The Panthers lone goal came on a penalty kick by Mallorie Haaksma after Coldwater was called for intentional handling in the box. Coldwater will play at non-conference Brooklyn Columbia Central, then host Parma Western in I-8 play Friday.
—BOYS GOLF—
Coldwater participated in the Marshall Redhawk Invitational on Friday and came away with a runner up trophy by finishing in 2nd place in the field of 18 teams. Overall winner was Jackson Lumen Christi which shot a team score of 313 with Coldwater right behind with a score of 317. Portage Central was 3rd with a 320 team score. Leading the way for Coldwater was Nathan Waterbury with a 78, Nolan Duda and Keagan Dwyer each had 79’s, Cam Ruge fired an 81 and Nick Galliers rounded out the scoring with an 86. Waterbury, Duda, and Dwyer earned medals by finishing in the top 10.
—TRACK—
Coldwater’s boys finished first while the Coldwater girls were seventh at the Edwardsburg Invitational on Friday.
Coldwater won the boys meet with 91 points. Bangor was second with 72 followed by St. Joseph with 70 points.
Three Rivers won the girls meet with 85 1/2 points followed by St. Joseph with 73 points and Edwardsburg with 62 points. Coldwater compiled 44 points.
Coldwater’s Connor Covert won the shot put with a distance of 52 feet and the discus with a distance of 168 feet. Jacob Evers won the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, six inches. Shuaib Aljabaly won the 3200 with a time of 9:55.02. The 3200 relay team of Ben Fagen, Zack Murphy, Jordan Parkinson and Matt Sowles won in a time of 8:22.45.
Kaci White was second for the Coldwater girls in the shot put while her teammate Hannah Parrish was third. Jordan Bouse was third in the discus while Claire Sheppard was third in the high jump.
Quincy’s boys and girls teams both came home with first place trophies on Friday at the Comstock Invitational. Quincy won the boys meet by five points over Mendon, 120-115. Comstock was third with 110. Bronson finished seventh. The Quincy girls finished first with 148 points followed by Mendon with 112 and Bronson with 104.
Quincy’s Brandon Gary and Nathan Nohr went 1-2 in the boys 3200. Nohr was also second in the 1600. Bryce Ruhl won the high jump by clearing six feet. Bronson’s Courtney Salesman finished second. Ruhl was also second in the long jump and the 200. Gavin Alger finished second in the 300 hurdles for the Vikings. Jon Purvis of Quincy was second in the shot put.
The Quincy girls won the 1600 and 3200 relays. Gabby Porter won the 1600 and was second in the 800 which was won by her teammate Harmony Harpster. Bronson’s Xochitl Garcia won the 3200 with Quincy’s Haley Bean finishing second. Katie Spaulding won the pole vault by clearing seven feet while Kayla Hayes was second in the shot put.
