COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved a three year contract extension with Republic Services of West Michigan for refuse and recycling services on Monday night. The current agreement expires at the end this month.
Republic requested consideration of a three-year contract that would include five percent increases for the second and third years.
The City has contracted with Republic Services for the past eleven years and according to City Manager Keith Baker has received consistently excellent service.
Council members agreed with Travis Machan who felt the city should renew with Republic for three years.
Baker added in his memo to the Council that the City staff would like to avoid the disruption to customers of a transition between refuse collection providers if possible.
In extending the contract for one year in April of 2022, the City Council expressed an interest in rebidding the contract at the end of the current term.
Baker said the staff had prepared a Request for Proposals for a new three to five-year contract but with the expiration of the current contract fast approaching, the staff requested consideration of an additional one-year contract with the proposed increased pricing and current terms remaining in effect.
Under terms of the latest agreement with Republic, customers will initially be charged a total of $17.35 a month for refuse, recycling and large item pickup. The existing rate is $15.40.
