BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals and the Quincy Orioles passed their initial tests in the M.H.S.A.A. girls softball tournament on Tuesday as they both scored pre-district victories.
The Cardinals defeated Marshall 10-5 in a Division Two pre-district game on the Red Hawks home diamond. It was the third victory for Coldwater over Marshall in eight days.
The first two wins helped the Cardinals win the Interstate 8 title. Tuesday’s win by Coldwater ended the Red Hawks season.
The Cardinals built a 10-0 lead before Marshall was able to get on the board with five runs in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Mackenzie Scheid pitched the first five innings.
Alexis Bills blasted a three run homer and had four RBI’s. Mya Porter had three hits and scored twice. Rylee Rice and Brooklyn Kerry both had two hits.
Coldwater will play Sturgis at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the Harper Creek district semifinals. The host Beavers will face Three Rivers in the other Saturday semifinal at noon. The championship game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m..
Meanwhile, Quincy advanced at the Division 3 district being hosted by Union City as they defeated the Chargers 11-5.
Union City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning but Quincy fought back in the bottom of the inning with five runs of their own that all came with two outs. The Orioles broke the game open with a six run fifth inning.
Winning pitcher Danika Skirka went the distance. Payton Gross had two hits and three RBI’s for Quincy while Kailey Allman and McKynna Connin both had two hits. Quincy had 12 hits in the game with nine different players having at least one hit.
Aislynn Phelps had two hits for Union City while Emily DeLisle drove in two runs.
Quincy plays Bronson at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in the first semifinal followed by Springport against Homer in the other Saturday semifinal at noon. The championship game is scheduled to be played at 2:00 p.m..
