Richard Edwin Gearig, 72, of Coldwater, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at his home in Coldwater, MI.
A funeral service and interment will be held Wednesday June 7, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Pettisville Union Cemetery in Pettisville, OH.
The family will receive guests for visitation Tuesday, June 6, 2023 from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater,. There will be a late luncheon following the visitation.
Richard was born February 27, 1951 to Veryl and Orpha (Lauber) Gearig in Wauseon, OH.
Richard honorably served his country in the United States Army, a duty he was fiercely proud of. Upon completion of his service to his country, Richard led a fulfilling career as a barber / stylist and business owner of the Silver Shear Barbershop in Pioneer, OH for over 30 years, drove school bus, and ultimately retired from the Ohio Turnpike. Richard’s service was not only limited to his country but also to his community and family as well.
In recent years, he attended both the Life Changing Reality Church in Angola as well as the North Reading Baptist Church, and prior to that he served as a Deacon and song leader at the Bridgewater Community Church in Montpelier, OH. He was a member of the Coldwater American Legion, the Coldwater Eagles, the Montpelier Moose Club, and was very involved with FFA from a young age.
Richard was a motivated man that regularly exercised at the Coldwater Senior Center and was an avid bike rider. He also enjoyed hiking at Pokagon, music, talking with everyone, working on cars with his siblings and children, and shared many fond memories of fishing, ice skating, and riding dirt bikes with his family at their pond in Montpelier, OH. Richard will be dearly missed as a loving father, grandfather, brother and dear friend.
Richard leaves behind his children Aisha Gearig of Queens, NY, Rachel Gearig (Luke Ralston) of Edmonds, WA, Lesley (Chris) Thompson of Hawthorne, CA, Abram Gearig (Rebecca Hecht) of Burbank, CA; his former wife and mother of his children Lynnette Gearig of Bryan, OH; his best friend Terri Hayes of Quincy, MI and her family; his siblings James (Darla) Gearig of Perrysburg, OH, Sandra Valuck of Sylvania, OH, Bill Gearig of Wauseon, OH, Patricia Gearig of Pittsburg, PA, Linda (Mike) Brown of Toledo, OH; his grandchildren Dreyden and Maxwel Thompson, Walter and Lewis Ralston; and his many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Janet Gunn, and his brother Donald Gearig.
Memorial donations are suggested to the American Legion in Coldwater, MI, to Life Changing Reality Church in Angola, IN, or to North Reading Baptist Church in Reading, MI.
