BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – It has not rained in Branch County for two weeks and the bone dry conditions are leading to some growing concerns among agricultural interests.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report from the University of Nebraska that was issued on Thursday show the southern half of Branch County as well as most of Hillsdale County are now considered to be abnormally dry.
Also falling into that category are portions of southeast Lower Michigan along with all of northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.
The Drought Monitor says there have been reports in Indiana of lawns in yards becoming stressed and going dormant and pond levels dropping.
The M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm west of Coldwater has gone dry after a soggy end to the month of April. Rain was recorded at that location on 14 out of 18 days between April 16 and May 3.
But there have been two days of rain since that time. Just under an inch was measured on May 7 and 22-hundredths of an inch of rain was measured there on May 19.
