COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The founder of the Oldsmobile Scramble has died. Dick Garn of Coldwater passed away on Saturday at the age of 72.
Garn founded the Oldsmobile Scramble during the 1980’s. It eventually grew to become the “World’s Largest National Golf Tournament” before Garn retired in 2001.
The tournament later became known as the Buick/Oldsmobile Scramble. It ended in 2005 after General Motors discontinued production of the Oldsmobile.
A 1999 article on www.theautochannel.com indicated that over 1.5 million golfers participated in an Oldsmobile Scramble local tournament since its inception in 1984 and that over 2,100 local tournaments were held each year in 48 states.
After Garn moved his entire family to Coldwater, he and his brother Terry built Eagle Printing Company.
A memorial service for Dick Garn will be held this Friday at 3:00pm at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Coldwater.
Visitation will be prior to the service at the church starting at 1:00pm.
Memorials may be directed to Heartland Hospice or Maple Lawn Activities Fund.
