BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council took no formal action Monday night on an ordinance for urban chickens.
They tabled the matter in order for the city to continue looking for a third party to administer the proposed ordinance.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says in his report for Monday’s Council meeting that the Bronson Planning Commission approved sending an ordinance to City Council based off the Portage City Ordinance with the condition that a third party be found.
He says the city reached out to a number of companies including the City’s rental inspection vendor, SAFEBuilt but SAFEBuilt indicated they would not be willing to take this on without contracting to do all of the City’s code enforcement duties.
According to Mersman, this would be a substantial cost to the city annually.
Urban chickens has been before the Council and the Bronson Planning Commission for the past six months.
If the City Council wants to proceed with an ordinance, Mersman thinks it would be more appropriate in the animal ordinance rather than having it in the zoning code.
