STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – Wildfire smoke from Canada is once again causing problems for people in the area who are dealing with respiratory issues.
The smoke is creating hazy conditions and has prompted Air Quality Alerts to be issued by the National Weather Service for northeast Indiana including Steuben County through midnight on Tuesday.
An Air Quality Action Day has been declared by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for most of northwest Indiana
and all of northeast Indiana as ozone levels are expected to be in the Orange or unhealthy for sensitive groups range.
People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone and fine particulate formation. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, using gasoline powered lawn equipment and using charcoal lighter fluid.
It is recommended that people with respiratory diseases such as asthma limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
