COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A fire broke out late Friday afternoon at the Real Alloy Recycling Plant at 267 North Fillmore Rd. Coldwater firefighters were initially dispatched to the fire at 4:46pm, with an “all call” issued minutes later.
According to Fire Chief Rich Sherman, the fire started in containers of magnesium outside the facility and quickly spread to the building’s roof and exterior, along with nearby piles of aluminum scrap. A large amount of smoke could be seen from the fire which was called under control about two hours later. Because magnesium is extremely reactive to water, dry sand and flux were used in part to extinguish the fire.
No injuries were reported. It’s not known how many people were inside when the fire broke out.
