QUINCY TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Firefighters from seven Branch and Hillsdale County fire departments had to be called in Wednesday when a fire destroyed a sawmill north of Quincy.
The fire which was reported at 11:48 a.m. at 665 Quincy-Grange Road south of Jonesville Road.
The Quincy Fire Department was initially dispatched. Fire crews from Coldwater, Lakeland, Bronson, Allen, Litchfield and Jonesville along with Life Care Ambulance were also dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters not only had to battle the flames but the heat as well. Wednesday afternoon temperatures got into the upper 80s with heat index readings in the low 90s.
Quincy Assistant Fire Chief Rodney Bailey said the cause of the fire is not known due to the extensive damage. He said according to the owner, they saw flames coming from a diesel engine. The fire spread after they were unsuccessful in trying to put out the fire with extinguishers.
No injuries were reported and at least a half dozen tankers had to be used to haul water to the scene.
The fire forced Quincy-Grange Road to be shut down between Newton and Jonesville Roads. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic control.
The last firefighting unit cleared the scene at 4:11 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
