COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council will be asked Monday night to consider whether or not to abandon the public’s right of way over the undeveloped western-most portion of Washington Street.
The vacation would cover Washington between South Polk Street and a line about 190 feet east of the previously vacated portion of South Fremont Street which is the site of the former Franklin School.
City Attorney Megan Angell said during the Council’s June 26 meeting the city is being asked to vacate, abandon and discontinue the public right-of-way in order to satisfy a title company requirement for the closing of the sale between the Coldwater Community Schools and the developer of the Coldwater Senior Villas.
She said the section of Washington Street appeared on a “plat” of the Village of Coldwater made just after the turn of the century from an 1846 map.
The Council is scheduled to take action on the request following a public hearing. The proposed resolution would allow the City to reserve an easement and right-of-way in the abandoned portion of Washington Street for all public utility purposes.
