COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With a deadline looming later this spring on any jail millage ballot proposal, the need for a new county building inspector, and continued conversation on staffing for the sheriff’s department, the Branch County Board of Commissioners meets later this morning. The 10 a.m. session at the Branch County Courthouse is one of two regular meetings for commissioners this month. The board also held a Work Meeting earlier this week.
Commissioners have discussed two possible options for a new jail. One proposal woud have a new facility built on the ground adjacent to the current jail just north of Coldwater on Marshall Road. Discussions have also been underway with state officials to possibly acquire land near the prison complex at the corner of Marshall and State Streets.
The deadline to place any issue on the August primary ballot is May 10. If commissioners hold off until the November general election, they have until August 16 to get it on the ballot.
