COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After extensive discussion at their Work Session last week, the Branch County Board of Commissioners has approved the request from Public Defender Director Matt Glaser for an additional state funded full time social worker.
The unanimous vote for the addition came during the commission’s meeting Tuesday.
Glaser said in his request that the additional social worker was needed as the result of increasing and projected caseloads. He pointed out that on average his office has represented nearly 1,100 cases per year for the last three years which did not include probation violations or personal protection orders.
The position has been approved by the Michigan Indigent Defense Council and the state funds are available to hire this person immediately. Glaser says hiring the social worker will have no additional financial impact on Branch County.
