COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school boys basketball, the MHSAA Tournament has reached the District Semifinal round, with all of Branch County’s teams beginning play tonight.
Coldwater will face Paw Paw tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of a Class B District Semifinal Doubleheader hosted by the Redskins. Our live pregame coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 begins tonight at around 7:15 p.m. with the audio also streamed online at wtvbam.com
The Cardinals have an 11-9 record and are coming off a 12-day layoff following their regular season-ending 79-65 win at Charlotte on February 26th. The Cardinal team members and coaches watched Paw Paw eliminate Vicksburg Monday night by an 89-64 score, paced by a school-record 50 points from sophomore Luke Toliver. The Coldwater-Paw Paw winner will face the winner of tonight’s first game between Edwardsburg and Three Rivers on Friday night.
Over at Union City High School’s McNett Fieldhouse, tonight’s Class C District Semifinal twinbill begins at 5:30 p.m. with the host Chargers facing cross-county Big 8 rival Quincy for the third time in less than a month. The winner will play Friday night for the District crown against the winner of tonight’s second game between Bronson and Homer which will tip off at around 7:30 p.m. Homer eliminated Reading Monday night by a 67-37 score.
At the Class D North Adams-Jerome District, Pansophia Academy opens up tournament play facing Hillsdale Academy in tonight’s second semifinal game at around 7:30, with the winner going up against either North Adams-Jerome or Will Carleton Academy on Friday night.
And at the Class D Bellevue District, it’s Tekonsha against St. Philip in tonight’s first game which tips off at 5:30 p.m. The Indians advanced by beating Calhoun Christian 56-32 on Monday. The Tekonsha-St. Philip winner moves on to face either Bellevue or Marshall Academy Friday night.
The MHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament played its regional semifinal round last night, and in Class B at Harper Creek, Edwardsburg, the team that eliminated Coldwater this past Friday, found themselves bounced from the tournament, as Otsego beat the Eddies 52-30. Otsego’s next opponent on Thursday night: 7th-ranked Marshall, as the two-time Interstate 8 champion Redhawks beat Class B Honorable Mention Stevensville Lakeshore 62-44 in yesterday’s other Regional Semifinal.
At the Class C Constantine Regional, Big 8 champion Homer fell to Class C Honorable Mention Niles Brandywine 46-36. Homer ended Union City’s season last Friday at Quincy. On the other side of the bracket, 9th-ranked Gobles nipped Schoolcraft 37-34.
And at the Class A Mason Regional, Interstate 8 runner-up Jackson Northwest squeaked past Kalamazoo Central 59-57. Battle Creek Lakeview was eliminated by East Lansing 56-32 in the other semifinal game.
