COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Even though the number of female inmates remains slightly over capacity at the Branch County Jail, there are no immediate plans to transfer more prisoners to the Calhoun County Jail. There were 22 women at the jail Thursday morning, but the amount was down to 20 on Friday.
Branch County Sheriff John Pollack says when the female inmate count reaches 22 or above, they then begin to look at transfer as a possibility. The jail is actually only designed to house 17 or 18 females at a time.
Branch County must pay Calhoun County $35.00 per day to house inmates at the jail in Battle Creek, plus cover any medical expenses. There have been several transfers in the past year to relieve overcrowding at the jail just north of Coldwater.
