COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school basketball Monday , in a non-conference matchup we had on the radio between longtime rivals Coldwater and Sturgis, the visitors from Sturgis led all the way in a 55-43 victory over the host Cardinals.
The Trojans were ahead 21-8 at the half and were up by as many as 18 points in the third quarter before Coldwater began a rally that cut the deficit to 5 points early in the final period. However, Sturgis went on a 13-0 run to build the gap back to 18 points at 51-33 before closing out the 12 point win.
Cameron Barnes had a team high 11 points for the Cardinals while Nate Waterbury had 10 including 8 for 8 from the free throw line and Waterbury was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater. The defeat dropped the Cardinals record to 9-7 while Sturgis has won 5 straight to improve to 10-5.
Coldwater returns to action tonight with an Interstate Eight Conference game at home against Pennfield with live coverage of the contest on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
There was no Coldwater-Sturgis freshman game last night but in the JV contest, Coldwater pulled out a 51-50 win over the Trojans with 13 points for Ethan Wiley and 11 for Ryan Murphy.
Also last night in non-league boys basketball, Bronson lost 56-39 at Olivet with 9 points for Courtney Salesman. The defeat dropped the Vikings record to 2-12.
In boys bowling yesterday, Bronson rolled to a big win on the road 29-1 over Parchment in Kalamazoo at the Eastland Bowl. The high score for the Vikings in the victory was a 218 from Ryan Wisman.
It’s a busy schedule for tonight in boys and girls hoops besides the Coldwater boys hosting Pennfield. The Coldwater girls play at Pennfield while the Bronson Lady Vikings host Athens. In boys hoops, there’s a Branch County matchup as Union City is at Quincy. Also, Tekonsha hosts Jackson Christian.
In middle school girls basketball last night, Bronson took a pair of games at home over Cassopolis. They won the 8th grade game 32-30 over the visiting Rangers with 21 points and 18 rebounds for Keona Salesman. Bronson beat Cassopolis in the 7th grade contest 36-8 with 10 points for Brooke Washburn and 10 rebounds for Meagan Lasky.
The Union City 8th grade team lost 25-9 to Jonesville in the opening round of the Big 8 tournament at Reading.
