COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in boys basketball, Coldwater stops a skid while Union City streaks on and Quincy also joins the victory parade but Bronson loses and in the lone Girls game, Coldwater couldn’t slow down the Mounties.
We had the Coldwater games on the radio with the Cardinals at home against Jackson Northwest and the Boys ended a three game losing streak by defeating Northwest 69-52. Coldwater carried a 37-26 lead into the second half and pulled away after the break to produce a 17 point victory. Brady Beckhusen had a game high 24 points for the Cardinals while Nate Waterbury was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater with 15 points and a take charge performance in the backcourt with no turnovers. The Cardinals improved to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in the Interstate Eight. On Monday, Coldwater hosts Sturgis.
On the girls’ side last night, Coldwater went up against a team with only one loss on the season and Northwest wasn’t to be denied their 15th win in 16 games as the final score showed the Cardinals losing 61-40. Malorie Rzepka captured our Player of the Game honors for Coldwater with 15 points, 9 steals, and 5 rebounds while her fellow freshman teammate, Tyler Scheid, pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with her 8 points. The Lady Cardinals slipped to 5-5 in the conference and 9-7 overall with their next game on Tuesday at Pennfield.
Returning to Boys hoops, Quincy had no trouble winning on the road with a 61-32 victory at Athens. Quinn Eifrid had 19 points for the Orioles with 15 for Ryan Gibson and 10 points and 7 rebounds for Brandon Gary. Also, Nate Karney had 9 points, 8 assists and 5 steals as Quincy improved to 6-3 in the Big 8 conference and 8-6 overall.
The Orioles next opponent at home coming up Tuesday will be Union City, which made its nine straight wins last night in a 52-28 victory against visiting Springport. The Chargers are 8-1 in the Big 8 and 12-2 overall.
Bronson travelled to Mendon and the visiting Vikings couldn’t get past the Hornets, losing 68-64. Noah Roberts paced a balanced offense for Bronson with 14 points and was one of five Viking players in double figures. Jonah Klingler added 12 points and 11 rebounds with Bronson sliding to 1-7 in the BCS East and 2-11 overall.
Today’s high school sports schedule features the Coldwater Stick It For A Cure Cardinal Gymnastics Invitational with 100% of the proceeds from the cancer awareness and prevention fundraiser benefitting the CHC Oncology Center and its patients. It’s all happening at the Coldwater High School Athletic Lobby and Auxiliary Gymnasium. Also today, the wrestling postseason continues with the Individual Districts. In Division 2, Coldwater is at Vicksburg while in Division 4, Bronson and Quincy are at Cassopolis and Union City is at Lawton.
