BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The post season in high school wrestling started with the MHSAA Team Districts and Bronson was the only county school able to advance to next week’s Regionals.
Coldwater was eliminated in a close loss in Division Two at Harper Creek with the Cardinals falling to the host Beavers 37-36 in the final with a tiebreaker deciding the match. Coldwater had drawn a bye in the semifinals where the Beavers defeated Marshall. Earning victories for the Cardinals with pins were Jesse Miller, Ben Fagen, Sam DeMeester, Zach Gipple and Nick Pierucki. Also, Harwan Alaatre won by void. Harper Creek moves on to the Team Regional next Wednesday in Coldwater.
In Division Four at Bronson, the host Vikings defeated Quincy in the final 52-28 and beat Reading 51-24 in the semifinals. Quincy downed Camden Frontier 36-12 in the other semifinal. Going 2-0 on the night for Bronson were Brendan Withington, Tommy Littlefield, Cole Houtz, David Erwin, Nathan Caudill and Joey Losinski.
Quincy’s winners against Bronson were Casper Boshers, Joel Roush, Kalieb Miller, Jared Brown, and Joe Oberlinter. The Vikings will travel to Mendon for the Regionals and face Schoolcraft in the semifinals.
Also in Division 4 last night, Union City’s team season ended in the semifinals at the Homer District where the host Trojans eliminated the Chargers.
Last night in non-conference boys basketball at Union City, the Chargers beat Bronson 76-51 with the Hoops for Hope game serving as a fundraiser for Branch County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Union City was in control all the way, doubling up the Vikings by halftime 46-23 and they extended the lead to 64-31 before the Vikings cut the final deficit to 25 points.
Jalen Boes led the Chargers with 16 points while Elijah Way had 12. Seth Bruce had a game-high 13 rebounds in Union City’s eighth straight win that improved their record to 11-2. Bronson is now 2-10 with Noah Roberts scoring 16 points in the loss. The Vikings won the JV game 63-42.
Yesterday in high school bowling, Coldwater’s boys and girls teams picked up wins on the road over Jackson Lumen Christi. The boys remain undefeated in the conference at 11-0 and were paced Wednesday by Alec Keplinger with his high scores of 264 and 260.
The girls improved their record to 9-2 with Sadie Youse rolling a 232. The JV girls squad is 9-0 after defeating the Titans yesterday with a 127 for Jackie Rodriguez.
Tonight in high school sports, in girls basketball, in the Big 8, it’s Quincy at Athens while Union City hosts Springport. In the BCS East, Bronson is at home against Mendon. Also, Tekonsha hosts Camden Frontier. And in boys swimming and diving, it’s Senior Night for Coldwater as the Cardinals host Sturgis at the Browne Aquatic Center.
Yesterday in girls middle school basketball, Coldwater split their 4 games against Harper Creek with wins for the 8th grade A and 7th grade B teams while Harper Creek won the 8th grade B and 7th grade A contests. In the 8th grade action at Coldwater, the Cardinals beat the Beavers in the A game 51-47 with 20 points and 12 rebounds for Carlee Crabtree along with 12 points for Olivia Foley. The B team lost their game 36-29 with 7 points for Emma Moore.
The 7th grade A team fell at Harper Creek 22-14 with 7 points for Mia Rzepka. The B team defeated the Beavers 17-12 with 11 points for Joselyn Salto.
Bronson split their games at Prairie Heights with a 30-26 win for the visiting Vikings in the 8th grade contest. Keona Salesman had 11 points. Bronson lost the 7th grade game 26-14 with 9 points for Meagan Lasky.
Union City’s 8th grade team lost 23-17 at Homer.
