COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Community Health Center of Branch County says babies at the hospital in Coldwater are raising awareness of heart defects. CHC is partnering on the project with the American Heart Association and the Mended Little Hearts of West Michigan. Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, and has been an increasing issue among adults and also affects newborns.
One in 100 babies are born with congenital heart defects in the United States. This is the most common birth defect and adds up to approximately 40,000 newborns each year. Of those 40,000 newborns with defects, 1,700 are in Michigan.
During the month of February each newborn at CHC will receive a red hat to help raise awareness. These hats were made by volunteers at the Mended Little Hearts of West Michigan. Each hat has been washed in a dye free and scent free soap and is ready to keep each little one warm and happy.
