COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals advanced in the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs on Friday night as they defeated the Sturgis Trojans 40-14 in a Division Three opening round district game.
It was the first meeting in football between the two long time rivals since 2013.
Coldwater built a 14-0 halftime lead on a 12 yard pass from Aiden Marsden to Gavin Budd and a eight yard run by DeAndre Douglas.
Spencer Rodesiler’s 11 yard touchdown and a 30 yard TD pass from Marsden to Budd put the Cardinals ahead 27-0.
After Sturgis got their first touchdown of the night, the Cardinals responded with a seven yard TD by Marsden and a 20 yard touchdown by Hunter Munson.
Rodesiler and Cam Torres both rushed for 102 yards. Marsden passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. Garrett Thorne led the Cardinal defense with eight tackles. Coldwater had a 389-306 edge in total yards including 347 rushing yards.
Coldwater improves to 5-2 and will play at Stevensville Lakeshore next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a Division 3 District Semifinal game.
