PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s Legend Szafranski won the girls Portage Regional cross country title on Saturday by almost 19 seconds as she and two members of the Coldwater boys team advanced to the MHSAA Division Two Cross Country Finals at Michigan International Speedway.
Szafranski won in a time of 20:07.63. She ran as an individual after she finished first last week at the pre-regional meet.
She is the third girl from Coldwater to win a cross country regional title joining Elka Machan last year and Sarah Moore in 2002.
Marshall won the girls regional title with only 28 points. Harper Creek and Vicksburg also advanced to the state finals.
The Coldwater boys were sixth in the final team standings. Harper Creek won the boys regional title by 15 points over Berrien Springs, 70-85. Coldwater finished 13 points behind third-place Vicksburg for the final transfer spot to MIS.
Coldwater’s John Aerts and Myron Lafty are going to the MHSAA State Finals as individuals after they earned medals at the regional meet. Aerts was second in a time of 16:46.33. Lafty also punched his ticket for the Irish Hills with a 14th place finish in a time of 17:41.08.
