NILES, MI (WTVB) – The Union City cross country teams opened their seasons at the Viking Stampede Invitational in Niles on Friday.
Both teams finished third and every runner on both Union City teams medaled.
The Union City girls placed third (55 points) behind Plainwell (42) and Niles (51).
Leading the Chargers was freshman Alli Gautsche who placed third (21:42), followed closely by teammate Skyler Fraley in 4th (22:02). Alissa Skirka placed a solid 10th (23:06), Elizabeth Arlt in 18th (25:15), and rounding out the top five for the Chargers was freshman Keira Taylor in 23rd (25:53). Also medaling for the Chargers were freshman Carly Smith in 26th (27:08) and Olivia Wood in 34th (33:22).
The Union City boys were third (62) behind Plainwell (36) and Edwardsburg (58). Leading the Chargers was sophomore Ben Gautsche placing 5th (17:24). He was followed by teammates Jason Shoop in 12th (18:41), freshman Cullen Decker in 13th (18:49), Malachi Payne in 15th (19:15) and Maddox Miller in 17th (19:33). Also medaling were freshman Noah June in 19th (19:55), Cohen Burdick in 25th (20:33), Aidan Taylor in 26th (20:40), Mason Hawthorne in 31st (21:46), freshman James Riel in 34th (22:02), and freshman Jack Dibert in 41st (23:14).
