BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Associations of REALTORS® says they seen a recent surge in potential renters being scammed in Branch County.
According to the Michigan Department of Attorney General’s website, when searching for a place to rent, it is important to rely on reputable websites that not only provide a detailed listing and photos, but also contact information for the landlord.
Potential renters are being told there are signs of scammers to watch out for such as you’re asked to wire money or you’re asked to provide a security deposit or first month’s rent before touring or signing a lease.
It may also be a scam if you find the listing under different names or you find out the landlord is out of town.
Local realtors say bottom line, if you can’t meet in person, tour the property or sign a lease before you pay, keep looking for another rental property.
