DEWITT, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School boys varsity soccer team picked up its first wins of the season Saturday, capturing the title in the inaugural Panther Cup tournament at DeWitt High School.
The Cardinals opening contest against DeWitt was tied 2-2 after regulation, with Coldwater winning 3-2 in a shootout, which was decided by the 11th kicker.
DeWitt had a 2-1 lead at the half, with Coldwater’s goal coming from Arif Ahmed, assisted by Ghaith Musa, with 15:22 left in the half. Ahmed tied the score with 34:00 to play in the game, assisted by Mohammed Abdullah.
Each team made four of their five shots in the opening shootout round and all five in the second round. After Coldwater’s Ezaldeen Ahmed made the 11th kick, the DeWitt player hit his shot over the goal for the Coldwater win.
Franky Ramos made five saves in goal, including one in the shootout.
In the championship game, Fenton took the early lead halfway through the first half before Ghaih Musa scored with 11:30 left in the half, assisted by his twin brother Laith.
Hisham Ahmed scored with 33:30 to play in the game, assisted by Ghaith Musa. Fenton tied the score at 2-2 with a goal with 26:50 to play. Arif Ahmed then put Coldwater back on top with a penalty kick goal with 8:24 to play for the 3-2 win.
Ramos made seven saves in goal as Coldwater outshot Fenton 16-14.
With the wins, the Cardinals are now 2-3 on the season and will have their home opener Monday at 6:30 p.m. against Otsego.
The Coldwater junior varsity team lost to DeWitt in their opening round game before defeating Fenton for third place Saturday. They will host Holt at 5:00 p.m. Monday.
