COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in varsity boys basketball, Quincy was a winner on the road, beating Springport 62-35. Brandon Gary had 15 points, Quinn Eifrid 14, and Ryan Gibson 12 while Nathan Karney had 14 assists. The Orioles improved to 4-2 and 2-1 in the Big 8.
Also in the Big 8, Union City defeated visiting Jonesville 53-25 with 18 points for Jalen Boes and 13 for Colin Kreger. The win moves the Chargers to 4-2 and 2-1 in the conference.
Tekonsha fell at Battle Creek St. Philip 57-48. Andy Galliers led the Indians in the loss with 15 and 10 rebounds while Anthony Layne added 14 points.
In girls basketball, Bronson lost 44-33 at Centreville with 10 points for Alexa Ratkowski. The Lady Vikings slip to 1-2 in the BCS East and 4-3 overall.
In reserve basketball last night, the Coldwater Junior Varsity and Freshman girls won at Harper Creek. In the JV game, Coldwater beat the Beavers 55-36. Samantha Rodesiler had 15 points while Emilee Smoker had 13 points and 10 rebounds. The girls freshman squad beat Harper Creek 24-21. Kelsi Herlan had 17 points and 9 rebounds.
On the Boys side, the Coldwater freshman won at home over Harper Creek 48-40 with 14 points for Austin Roby. Also, Union City’s JV boys team lost to Jonesville 41-35 with 9 points for Tobey Austin.
Last night in boys swimming and diving, in the first year for the program at Coldwater, the Cardinals had their first ever home meet at the Browne Aquatic Center and went down to defeat to Battle Creek Central 114-63. Javier Perez led the Cardinals in scoring, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 50 free. Dive captain Austin Butler took first place in the 100 free and third in the 1-meter dive. Swim captain Jace Arnold added second place showings in the 200 free and 500 free. Tomorrow, Coldwater swims at the Loy Norrix Invitational.
Thursday in varsity bowling, Coldwater had their first home meet of the season with wins for both squads over Parma Western at Midway Lanes. The boys beat the Panthers 30-3 with high scores for Alec Keplinger, rolling a 236 and 234 while Shawn Johnson also had a 234 and Collin Outwater a 210. The girls won 30-0 with Sadie Youse scoring a 205 and a 200. The boys are now 4-0 with the girls record at 3-1.
Tonight in high school sports, in Varsity boys and girls basketball, it’s Coldwater at Harper Creek and we’ll have both ends of the Interstate Eight Conference doubleheader on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 WTVB with live coverage beginning around 5:30 p.m. following the Evening Journal. The girls tip-off at 6 p.m. with the boys game set for 7:30 p.m. In boys only action tonight, Bronson hosts Centreville while in girls only games, Quincy is at Springport, Union City hosts Jonesville, and Tekonsha hosts Battle Creek St. Philip.
In middle school girls basketball, Bronson’s seventh grade team opened their season at home with a 30-15 win over Homer with 20 points for Meagan Lasky.
