WASHINGTON D.C. (WTVB) – It was a different State of the Union address and his last. Rather than talk about successes and lobby for future legislation, President Barack Obama decided to focus last night on four themes, economic equality, making technology work for us and not against us, keeping America safe, and fixing U.S. politics. He called the last issue his greatest regret, promising to fix Washington politics and watching it get even worse during his tenure.
Branch County’s representative in the U.S. House, Michigan Republican 7th District Congressman Tim Walberg, released a statement responding to the President’s address: “After seven years of division, tonight’s State of the Union was one of President Obama’s last remaining opportunities to finally unite the country around bipartisan solutions. Unfortunately, the President missed that opportunity, taking the usual go-it-alone approach and describing many of the same outdated policies we’ve heard so many times before”.
According to Walberg, “The challenges of the 21st Century require us to develop new solutions and a better path forward. In an increasingly unsafe world, we need to strengthen our national security and protect the American people. In a sluggish economy, we need to create more good-paying jobs, boost take home pay, and expand opportunity for every American. I’m working to empower working families in Michigan—not grow the size of Washington—and I hope the President will work with us to find common ground.”
