UNDATED (WTVB) – Coldwater and Bronson picked up boys basketball wins Friday night, while girls hoops teams from Coldwater, Quincy, Union City, and Tekonsha suffered setbacks.
In boys basketball, the Cardinals claimed sole possession of first place in the Interstate 8 with a wire-to-wire 59-50 win at Jackson Northwest, combined with an 80-67 win by Pennfield over the other co-league leaders, Harper Creek. Coldwater prevailed despite being out-rebounded 47-39 and showing some brief periods of sluggishness. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, junior guard Collin Warner, scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. Freshman Gage McGuire had 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots, while Nate Waterbury had 8 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals and Brendan Spangler had 6 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. The Cardinals improve to 3-0 in the Interstate 8, 5-1 overall. and play at Pennfield on Tuesday.
At Bronson, the Vikings picked up their first win of the season, 66-61 against visiting Mendon to improve to 1-4 overall, 1-2 in the BCS East. Jonah Klingler had a team-high 18 points and 8 rebounds, Branson Thenen had 17 points and 7 boards, Daniel McMichael had 12, and Luis DePaz 10.
In girls basketball, it was all Jackson Northwest in the opener of the doubleheader between the Mounties and Coldwater. Northwest outscored the Lady Cards 21-3 in the opening period of the game and cruised to a 65-39 win to remain undefeated on the season. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, freshman guard Malorie Rzepka, led the team with 14 points, 3 steals, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds. Kendall Galloway added 9 points and 5 rebounds, Tyler Scheid had 8 points and 5 boards, and Megan Hoath had a team-high 7 rebounds. Coldwater falls to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in the Interstate 8 as they get ready to host Pennfield Tuesday night.
Quincy dropped a 50-35 decision against Reading to fall to 0-7 overall, 0-3 in the Big 8. Katie Spalding had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Payton Hines also scored 10.
Union City lost at Concord 74-43 to drop to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the Big 8. Rachel Wing led the Chargers with 13 points and 8 rebounds, while Allison Adams had 9 points and 7 boards.
Tekonsha fell to visiting Climax-Scotts 74-21. Jordynn Lloyd had 14 points to lead the Indians, who drop to 2-7 overall, 0-5 in the SCAA Central.
On today’s schedule, in boys basketball, Quincy hosts Climax-Scotts. In wrestling, Coldwater and Quincy are at the Clinton Invitational, while Union City hosts the Paul Smeltzer Memorial Invitational. In gymnastics, Coldwater competes at the Lowell Invitational. And in competitive cheer, Bronson is at the Leslie Invitational and Quincy is at the Hudson Invitational. Tomorrow in bowling, Coldwater travels to Battle Creek’s M-66 Bowl for the Battle of the Baker.
