WASHINGTON D.C. (WTVB) – An emotional President Obama Tuesday announced his plans to close gun law loopholes that allow people to avoid background checks, and was immediately met with a firestorm of opposition from Republicans in Congress and on the presidential campaign trail. The President wants to hire more FBI staff to do those background checks, and eliminate the loophole for gun show and online sales.
Michigan 7th District GOP Congressman Tim Walberg, who represents Branch County in the U.S. House, said the President’s actions further undermine our balance of powers and restrict the constitutionally protected rights of American citizens to bear arms. Walberg said he will continue to stand with law abiding gun owners who exercise their Second Amendment rights and against an overreaching President trying to impose his political agenda by executive fiat.
President Obama says he is not out to curb legal gun sales, just those that avoid adequate background checks, and many polls show that most Americans agree with the President on this one.
