STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A man is in custody and a large quantity of suspected illegal drugs were seized during an early morning execution of two search warrants in northern Steuben County.
Steuben County Sheriff’s detectives with the assistance of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Special Response Tactical Team conducted a search of a residence at about 5:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Snow Lake Lane 840. Deputies found two adults and a juvenile inside.
According to a Sheriff’s Department press release, a subsequent search of the property yielded a large quantity of suspected Methamphetamine, several pieces of suspected drug paraphernalia, and over $70,000 in cash. There was also some stolen items located on the property.
The second search warrant was executed at about 6:30 a.m. on a commercial building in the 500 block of East Depot in Fremont. That search yielded more suspected Methamphetamine, more suspected drug paraphernalia, and a firearm.
Taken into custody was the owner of both properties identified as 50 year old James Edward Amstutz of rural Fremont.
Amstutz was booked into the Steuben County Jail on four counts of Dealing Methamphetamine and two counts of Possession of Paraphernalia. Amstutz remains held in lieu of a $60,500 bond.
The search warrants follow a Sheriff’s Office drug investigation that lasted for several weeks. That investigation is continuing, and additional suspects and criminal charges may be sought.
