COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In girls high school basketball Tuesday, Coldwater remained undefeated as they rallied from 14 points down in the final quarter to defeat Kalamazoo Central 69-63 in overtime.
Coldwater was down four with 30 seconds remaining but Carlee Crabtree hit two free throws and then had a steal and hit Jamie Wellet with a pass. Wellet was fouled and calmly hit two free throws with 26.6 seconds left to tie the score at 53 and send the game into an extra period. Coldwater outscored the Maroon Giants 16-10 in OT to move their record to 6-0 and hand K Central their first loss of the season.
McDonald’s Player of the Game Malorie Rzepka went 15 out of 16 from the line, including eight for eight in OT on her way to setting the Coldwater single game scoring record with 33 points. Kenzie Galloway scored 32 twice in the 2013-14 season.
Crabtree finished with 14 points while Tyler Scheid scored six points and pulled down 21 rebounds. Cris Fontecha and Jamie Wellet each had 6 assists.
Coldwater is off until they travel to Detroit to play in the Motor City Roundball Classic on December 29th and 30th where they will face Waterford Kettering and Detroit Renaissance.
The underclassmen games were split. Coldwater won the J.V. game 47-28 as Bailey Burkhardt and Taylor Wilber both had 10 points. Burkhardt also had eight rebounds. Autumn Sunderland added eight points.
Kalamazoo Central won the freshman game 59-49. Alyssa Bach had 14 points and seven rebounds for Coldwater while Abby Herman and Marissa Cox both had 11 points while Madison Beckhusen had seven points.
