BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers wrapped up their second straight Big 8 Conference championship on Friday night with a 54-0 victory over the Quincy Orioles during Quincy’s homecoming game.
The 2023 championship was the Chargers 24th Big 8 Conference title.
Union City scored twice in the first quarter on a Brendan Labar 16 yard touchdown and a 16 yard pass from Elijah Payne to Aidan Decker.
The Chargers put the game away with four second quarter touchdowns. Riley Laird scored a 27 yard touchdown, Payne hooked up with Jeremy Zehr on a eight yard TD, Rick Austin had a 38-year interception return for a score and Owen Jackson closed out the first half scoring with a three yard touchdown.
The Chargers tacked on two more scores in the second half with the running clock. Dylon McDonald scored from three yards out and Labar got his second touchdown of the night from 17 yards.
Payne passed for 76 yards and two scores. Labar led a balanced Union City running attack with 85 yards on seven carries. Laird had 84 yards on eight carries while McDonald had 62 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Union City had a 382-81 edge in total yards. The Chargers are now 5-1 overall and finish 4-0 in the Big Eight Conference. Quincy drops to 2-4 overall and finish 2-2 in the conference.
Also in the Big 8 Conference on Friday night, Bronson lost their homecoming game to Springport 32-16. The Vikings only trailed 12-10 entering the final quarter and a Seth Withington 11-yard touchdown put them ahead 16-12. But the Spartans scored 20 unanswered points over the final 6:46 to put the game away.
The loss dropped the Vikings record to 2-4 overall. They finished 1-3 in the Big 8.
