BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The U.S. Drought Monitor said in their latest report last Thursday that moderate drought conditions are now taking place in the far southern part of Branch, Hillsdale and St. Joseph Counties as well as throughout most of the State of Indiana.
Abnormally dry conditions are being reported elsewhere in Branch, Hillsdale, St. Joseph, Calhoun and Kalamazoo Counties.
The M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm recorded 2.73 inches of rain for September but nothing was measured for two weeks between September 12 and 26.
A total of seven-tenths of an inch was measured there last Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to Drought Monitor’s web site, they got reports from the Indiana Extension Office of rapid maturation of crops, trees losing leaves, plants dying, large cracks in soils, stunted lawns, and dropping pond levels across the state, with burn bans in place.
Most of Branch County was in a severe drought in early July due to the lack of rainfall for two months. Drought conditions eased in July when nearly seven inches of rain fell during the month.
