COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Lady Cards opened their home high school basketball season with a 68-35 victory over the Lakeview Spartans Tuesday for their second consecutive victory.
Coach Ken Smoker said defense, scoring in transition, and selfless passing were the difference. Coldwater recorded 22 assists on their 27 buckets and scored often and easily in transition.
All 11 players scored, led by Olivia Foley’s 15 including four from beyond the 3-point line. Foley also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Cris Fontecha and Carlee Crabtree each added 10 points while Malorie Rzepka had eight points and seven rebounds. Crabtree also added a team high five assists.
The Cardinals open their league season on the road at Marshall on Friday night. Marshall holds a 42-0 record in the Interstate 8’s three years of existence.
Coldwater won the J.V. game 34-20 as Bailey Burkhardt and Merna Yaldo both had eight points while Mya Rzepka had six points. Burkhardt also had six rebounds. Coldwater recorded 18 steals on defense.
Coldwater also won the freshman game 50-32 as Alyssa Bach had 17 points, Madison Beckhusen had 14 points and Abby Herman had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Quincy 60, Leslie 59
The Orioles are now 3-0 as they won in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night. They outscored Leslie 17-12 in the final quarter to pull out a 60-59 home court victory. Destiny Skirka made two huge free throws with eight seconds to go in the game to put Quincy up by three. Leslie was able to get a shot off at the buzzer, but the shooter’s foot was on the line.
Katie Rathbun had a huge game with 20 points and ten rebounds, even though she was sick. Cailyn Cook added 10 points and four steals. Payton Hines dished out 10 assists.
