COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Three people were injured and two remain hospitalized following a suspected drunk driving head-on crash over the weekend on US 12 in Coldwater Township. The accident happened near Lott Road around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Michigan State Police say a car driven by a 21-year old Megan Bretschneider from Niles was headed east on US 12 when her vehicle drifted into the westbound lane and collided with a Ford Bronco. The SUV was driven by 38-year old Christopher Smith, who just moved to Quincy from Missouri with his wife on Friday.
Smith’s 35-year old wife Jamie was pinned in the car and according to troopers suffered multiple fractures. She was flown from the scene to Samaritan Hospital in Ft. Wayne. Her husband was treated and released from the Community Health Center of Branch County.
Bretschneider was flown by Air Care to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of what troopers described as non-life threatening injuries.
US 12 was closed down for 2-and-a-half hours from Lott Road east to Fox Road following the crash. Troopers were assisted by Coldwater City Police and the Coldwater Fire Department.
Michigan State Police are continuing their investigation and are asking that anyone with information about the accident to call the MSP Marshall Post or Silent Observer.
