COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council passed a resolution Monday night that is in support of the 2021 Michigan Department Of Transportation U.S. 12 Roadway Improvement Work.
The resolution was requested by MDOT which has scheduled a resurfacing of U.S. 12 from Western Avenue to Michigan Avenue.
City Manager Keith Baker says the project includes asphalt surface milling and asphalt resurfacing work for the additional width of parking lanes as well as sanitary sewer and structure repair work along U.S. 12 that will be the City and Coldwater B.P.U.’s responsibility.
The estimated City contribution is $65,000 for the repaving of the downtown parking lanes. The project is scheduled to begin next spring.
In other business, the Council approved the city’s investment of $14,800 towards the cost that Intersect Studio of Kalamazoo will be charging to help develop plans for the improvement of the Chicago Street corridor between Clay and Sprague Streets.
The Coldwater Downtown Development Authority Board voted during their last meeting to make a $5,000 contribution towards the development of plans by Intersect.
Branch County Economic Growth Alliance Executive Director Lisa Miller says it has been 35 years since the City of Coldwater and its Downtown Development Authority have invested in a comprehensive downtown plan.
Economic Development Assistant Audrey Tappenden told the D.D.A. Board recently the goal is to help develop a vision for the enhancement of this portion of Chicago in order to improve its walkability and beauty over time.
A subcommittee made up of City Council and D.D.A. members will be involved in the planning with Intersect.
Architect Bill LaDitka said in a letter to the city the process will require between eight to ten weeks of work.
The Council met in closed session for almost a half hour to discuss the acquisition of land. When the Council came back into open session, a motion was made by Council Member Travis Machan to buy the land which was discussed but it died for lack of a second and the meeting was adjourned.
