COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Compared to the previous year, there was more than double the amount of vehicles and participants on September 30 at the Branch County Fairgrounds for the City of Coldwater and the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities’ annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.
Event coordinator Chad Rakocy told the Coldwater B.P.U. Board of Directors on Wednesday evening over 22,000 pounds of household hazardous waste was collected this year from 252 participants compared to just under 11,000 pounds from 121 participants in 2022.
Biz Aid LLC – Recycling offered electronic recycling after they joined the city and the CBPU as a partner. There was over 6,000 pounds of e-waste collected followed by over 3,600 pounds of motor oil and over 2,800 pounds of oil based paint.
This year’s number of participants was the largest since 2018 when there were 312 vehicles. The highest amount of participants were from the City of Coldwater with 118 followed by Coldwater Township with 41.
The total cost was $19,607 or $81.34 per vehicle.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day was created to help keep drinking water and local natural resources safe from contamination.
Participating this year were the cities of Coldwater and Bronson as well as the Village of Quincy and the Townships of Algansee, Bethel, Bronson, California, Coldwater, Girard, Kinderhook, Ovid and Quincy.
