COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School boys soccer team captured its first ever district crown Saturday, defeating Marshall 3-2 in double overtime. The seventh-ranked Cardinals took the title, despite losing twice in the regular season to the sixth ranked Redhawks..
Coldwater scored the opening goal after 10:15 of play with Mohamed Nagi scoring on an assist from Jon Brownell. 94 seconds before halftime, the Redhawks found Brett Swaton off a corner kick to even it up. The game stayed locked at 1-1 until 5:05 remained in the second half.
The Cardinals took the lead on a penalty kick from Ahmed Saied to put Coldwater up 2-1. The Redhawks tied the contest with 57 seconds remaining to send the game to two 10 minute overtime periods. With 5:19 left in the second overtime period, Coldwater scored what would be the game winning goal. A Nasser Nagi shot hit the post, deflecting to Nasser’s brother Mohamed for his second goal of the game.
Both Coldwater and Marshall’s overall records are now 20-3-1 following the match. The Cardinals are unbeaten for two years on their home field.
Coldwater advances to the Regional Semifinal at Marshall Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against top-ranked and unbeaten Dexter. Dexter beat Tecumseh 3-0 in their district final Saturday.
