COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – We all know what a nuisance robocalls are and how they’re used for troublesome scams that victimize so many at increasing levels every year. Branch County’s area code experienced 4.3 million robocalls last month alone.
Telecommunications software maker YouMail Incorporated says there were an average of 4.9 robocalls made for each of the affected 875,000 people living in the 517 area code. Nationally, just under 79-million robocalls were placed last month.
YouMail CEO Alex Quilici explained robocallers will call a number with the same area code as where they’re calling from in order for it to appear it’s a local call on the caller ID. He added residents are more likely to pick up the phone when they see a local number, although it’s really a robocall.
YouMail reports leading the Michigan list of the top ten robocallers by volume were student loan scams and Capital One Bank debt collection.
Los Angeles and Chicago ranked as the two cities with the most robocalling. Detroit was #19 on the list.
