COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In order to meet requirements from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; a proposed new Soil Erosion fee schedule was discussed during Thursday’s Branch County Board of Commissioners work shop.
County Administrator Bud Norman told Commissioners during a power point presentation that the fees are based upon moving over 250 square feet of dirt within 500 feet of a body of water.
The fees have not been revised since 2005 and some would be five times higher under the proposed plan in order for the county to stay under state compliance.
Norman said EGLE wants inspections every two weeks.
Norman said Drain Commissioner Mike Hard would not have to change his duties.
Hard said a part time person will need to be brought in.
The proposed fees were presented to Commissioners for informational purposes only. It was agreed that adjustments would be made to bring them down and they may be brought back to Commissioners for their next work session.
