GILEAD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Four fire departments responded to a barn fire east of Gilead Lake on Sunday night which caused about $850,000 worth of damage.
Bronson Deputy Fire Chief Ken Stutzman says the fire at 486 Hoopergarner Road was reported at around 7:10 p.m..
A 40 x 200 foot hog barn had flames coming from the west side of the building with heavy smoke at the peak and under the eaves when firefighters arrived.
The wooden barn with a metal roof was not occupied at the time and there were no pigs inside.
Bronson got mutual-aid response from the Lakeland, Orland and Fremont Fire Departments as about 50 firefighters were on the scene.
Equipment included eight tankers and an aerial ladder truck. About 60,000 gallons of water was used to put the fire out.
Stutzman says the fire was caused by an LP Gas heater malfunction on the west side of building.
The estimated loss to the building was $600,000 while $250,000 worth of contents were lost.
Firefighters were on the scene for almost five hours. Consumers Power, Life Care Ambulance and Shimp Excavating were also at the scene.
