COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater wrapped up the girls basketball regular season on Thursday night with a 44-28 win against Portage Central at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium. The Cardinals started off strong, outscoring the Mustangs 18-7 in the first quarter, but couldn’t make a field goal in the second quarter as they were outscored 8-3. Coldwater had a 14-11 edge in the third quarter and clamped down defensively in the final frame, outscoring the Mustangs 9-2.
Elli Foley led all scorers with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals, while Mya Porter added 11 and cousin Rylie VanAken had 10. Kenzie Scheid has a team-high 9 rebounds as the Cardinals improved to 19-3. They will return to action next Wednesday in an MHSAA Division 1 District Semifinal game at Gull Lake, where they will face either Sturgis or Battle Creek Lakeview.
Macy Searles led the Mustangs with 14 points; they fell to 17-2 and will compete in the Division 1 District at Loy Norrix next week.
The Cardinals and Mustangs could see each other again in the Regional Semifinals if they win their respective Districts.
