COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The autumn heat wave continues as highs are expected to be in the upper 80s to near 90 over the next couple of days. Cooler weather is expected Wednesday with more seasonal temperatures moving in on Thursday.
It was another scorching hot day for the last Sunday of September as temperatures were again almost 20 degrees above normal.
While Sunday’s high temperature in Coldwater as recorded at the Branch County Memorial Airport was 89 degrees at about 3:00 p.m., it was not a record high as it missed the record by two degrees.
The official high in Coldwater Saturday was 91 degrees, which set a new record high for the date. The old record for September 23 was 90 degrees set back in 1914.
It was also the second straight day of record heat in Coldwater. Friday’s high of 92 broke a record that was originally set in 1908.
In addition to the heat, it remains dry. Just under an inch of rain has fallen in Coldwater so far during September according to www.accuweather.com. If no rain falls this week, Coldwater would be over 11 inches below normal for rain since the first of April and September would be the sixth straight month of below normal rainfall.
According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor map, most of the southern half of lower Michigan including all of Branch County is abnormally dry. Northern Calhoun County along with all of Eaton County are included in an area that is considered to be in a moderate drought.
