EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association has approved an adjusted schedule for Fall Tournaments in football, girls volleyball and girls swimming & diving.
Winter sports will also resume after the three-week “pause” in activity ordered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services which is scheduled to end December 9.
The department announced a three-week pause this past Sunday to various activities including school sports in hopes of halting the state’s rising infections due to COVID-19.
If the department gives its approval, practice would resume for all three Fall sports December 9.
The girls volleyball state quarterfinals would be played Tuesday, December 15. One of the matches in Division Three would have Bronson facing top-ranked Monroe St. Mary’s Catholic Central at Whitmore Lake High School. The semifinals would be held on December 17 and 18 with the Finals on Saturday, December 19. Those final two rounds would be played at Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena, as previously scheduled.
After two weeks of practice, all three Lower Peninsula Diving Finals will be conducted on Tuesday, December 22 while the swimming finals will take place on Wednesday, December 23 with three high schools each hosting one meet. Three Coldwater athletes are affected by the delay in the M.H.S.A.A. swimming and diving finals. Charlotte Calhoun and Mia Rzepka were in the diving finals while Jillian McKinley had qualified for the swimming finals.
In football, the 11-Player Regional Finals and the 8-Player Semifinals would be played Tuesday, December 15, and Wednesday December 16. The 11-Player Semifinals and 8-Player Finals would be played December 21 and 22. The 8-player championship games will be held at Midland. The 11-Player Finals will be played Monday, December 28 and Tuesday December 29 at Ford Field.
For Winter sports, the Council approved resuming practices on December 9 if allowed by the M.D.H.H.S. with competition to begin January 4.
The Council meets again December 4 for its annual Fall Meeting and at that time they will consider possible tournament adjustments necessary due to the shortened Winter competition season.
