ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – He was known as the “Weekend Fisherman”. Bernard William “Bernie” Behnke passed away last Saturday at the Lakeland Nursing and Rehabilatation Center in Angola at the age of 96.
Behnke was a longtime resident of Rose Lake in Branch County.
His articles on fishing appeared in several newspapers in Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana. Before he wrote about fishing, Behnke was an award winning car salesman in Fort Wayne.
He and his late wife Luella were married for 71 years until her death in 2013. An annual scholarship fishing tournament on Coldwater Lake is named in his honor.
Visitation will be held at H.E. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home in Angola Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2017 at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Bernie Behnke Scholarship Tournament.
