COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater fire officials say a candle in a bedroom that may have been knocked over by pets onto combustibles is the suspected cause of a Sunday evening fire which caused moderate damage to a home at 674 North Union City Road.
The Coldwater Fire Department says the blaze at the Chad Rakocy residence was reported at 6:23 p.m.
There was heavy smoke at the single story residence and fire in the basement when firefighters arrived. The fire started in a basement bedroom and firefighters were able to contain the blaze in that location.
Fire Chief Rich Sherman says the downstairs bedroom sustained considerable damage. There was also significant smoke damage throughout the structure.
The occupants of the home escaped injury. A pet was retrieved and revived.
There were working smoke detectors in the house and it was insured.
The fire is considered accidental in nature. Firefighters were on scene for 2 ½ hours.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department Victim Assistance Unit and Lifecare Ambulance were among those assisting at the scene.
