CENTREVILLE, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A 25-year-old Sturgis man who is a suspect in last month’s sexual assault of two young girls during a home invasion was formally charged during an arraignment in St. Joseph County District Court on Friday afternoon.
Miguel Hernandez-Ruiz is facing charges of first-degree home invasion and two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under the age of 13. He is being held without bond pending his next court appearance on April 30.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office says he is also being held on an immigration detainer after the Mexican national’s temporary work visa expired in December of 2021.
Hernandez-Ruiz was apprehended over two weeks ago in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was wanted in connection to what happened on March 20 at the Sweet Lake Mobile Home Park near Sturgis.
The Sheriff’s Office tracked him to Fort Wayne. With the assistance of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, they initiated a continuous surveillance operation which led to his capture.
Law enforcement agencies who assisted the Sheriff’s included Sturgis Police, Fort Wayne Police, St. Joseph County Central Dispatch, Indiana State Police, Michigan State Police, Indianapolis Metro Police and their Violent Crime Task Force Team, TSA, ICE, FBI and Homeland Security.
