Jan was born on July 10, 1937 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Newton J. and Edith (Irish) Lawrence. She attended Bellevue High School and married Edward Rigel on May 1, 1959 in Battle Creek. He preceded her in death on March 22, 2008. She and Ed raised six boys together and worked hard to provide for their family. Jan worked as a waitress at Speeds Koffee Shop and at the Enquirer News. The couple lived in Battle Creek for many years, but moved to Sherwood in 1988.
Jan was kind-hearted, honest, and loved everyone she met. She loved going to garage sales and flea markets, talking on the phone to keep up with latest gossip, playing cards, hosting family gatherings, and of course, eating anything sweet and fattening. Jan also enjoyed interior decorating and would often paint, change the wallpaper, and furniture.
Mrs. Rigel is survived by her children Gary (Elvie) Rigel of Burlington, Mike Rigel of Chattanooga, TN, Roger Rigel of Sherwood, and Randy (Jeanie) Rigel of Battle Creek, her sister Shirley Colver of Battle Creek, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Jan was preceded in death by her parents, her sons Edward Harold Rigel, Jr. and Thomas Newton Rigel, her brothers Maurice Irish and Vern Lawrence, and her sister Marilyn Carpenter.
