EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater boys varsity soccer team improved its record to 5-1 on the season with a third place finish in the Eaton Rapids Division 2 Invitational Saturday.
The Cardinals opened the day with a 4-0 win over Tecumseh. Jonathan Brownell scored three goals, while Ben Fagen had the other. Ahmed Saied had two assists, with single assists for Ahmed Mohsen and Tyler Kooi. Balal Nasser got the shutout in goal, as Coldwater outshot Tecumseh 10-0.
The Cardinals fell to eventual champion Plainwell 4-2 in the semi finals. Brownell and Ahmed Saied each scored, with assists for Saied and Anas Asker. Nasser made 2 saves in goal as Coldwater suffered their first loss of the season.
Coldwater won the third place game 1-0 over Haslett. Jonathan Brownell had the lone goal in the game, assisted by Mohamed Nagi. Brandon Cortes and Balal Nasser combined for the shutout, with Nasser making one save in goal.
The Cardinals have their home opener Tuesday against Gull Lake, which will also be Parent’s Night for the varsity team. JV action begins at 5:00 p.m., with the varsity at 6:45 p.m.
The Quincy soccer team took second place at the in the Stockbridge Invitational Saturday. The Orioles beat Stockbridge in their first game 2-1. Alex Pickell had the pair of goals with assists from Andrew Abright and Bryce Pierce.
Quincy lost in a shootout in the championship game 3-1 after holding Onsted scoreless for both halves. Graham Sussex had 12 saves in goal during the championship game.
