COLDWATER , MI (WTVB) – A Branch County man drove his car into Coldwater Lake earlyFriday, but escaped injury when his BMW filled with water up over the seats of the vehicle.
Michigan State Police say the accident happened around 1:00 a.m. on south Centennial Road at the Warren Road intersection where Centennial dead ends at the lake. Trooper Jason Ackett identified the driver as 38-year old Thai Nguyen of Coldwater Lake. A
ckett said Nguyen told him there were foggy conditions at the time of the crash and that he blew through his stop sign at the intersection because he normally doesn’t use Centennial to get to his residence on Kenaston Drive and was unfamiliar with the road. Nguyen didn’t own the car, which he said belonged to a friend from Grand Rapids.
Ackett, who was at the scene for two hours while the vehicle was removed from the lake and towed away, said the car was listed as a total loss.
Nguyen was given a ticket for failure to stop in an assured clear distance.
